NURSING IN GERMANY

Nursing is in Germany an independent profession working, in hospital, closely together with physicians. Nurses support patients holistically with their physical, mental, and spiritual needs in mind.

Nursing tasks include…

  • … assessing the individual nursing need for each patient, selecting appropriate measures, and evaluating their success periodically.
  • … supporting patients with their basic and body care, targeting to rebuild or maintain the patients’ highest level of independence.
  • … consulting and supporting patients’ family members on nursing questions and related challenges.
  • … supporting in situations of the loss of abilities, the process of dying and death.
  • … tasks related to doctors’ treatments, the organisation, and the administration.

Nurses gain their professional qualifications typically in a three-year apprenticeship, combining theoretical learning in nursing schools and practical trainings in various settings dedicated to the nursing of individual. Nursing is a government regulated profession thus each apprenticeship ends with an official nursing exam.

NURSES FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION

Nurses holding a recognised nursing degree from one of the European Union’s countries or Switzerland can get their degrees recognised without additional exams. They need, however, provide proof of a profound knowledge of the German language.

NURSES FROM COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE EUROPEAN UNION

Nurses holding a recognised nursing degree from a country outside the European Union need to proof, too, profound knowledge of the German language. In addition, and prior to being granted a visa, they are required to have the curriculum of their nursing studies plus their individual professional work experience (excluding internships) compared to the German curriculum of the three-year nursing apprenticeship (Gleichwertigkeitsprüfung). The resulting formal notice (Defizitbescheid) lists the areas and amount of training hours to be completed prior to the recognition of the degree. Both the theoretical and practical deficits listed in the notice can be balanced by attending a recognition course (Anpassungskurs) of taking the German nursing exam (Kenntnisprüfung). The comparison should be applied for in the state (Bundesland) in which employment as professional nurse is desired.

The comparison typically takes approx. 6 months from providing all required documents and translations. A proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language can be provided with a German-B1 certificate issued by Goethe institution or ÖSD which must not be older than 1 year at the time of visa application. Not all German embassies accept certificates issued by ECL or TELC. An extra-occupational language training typically takes 6-9 month for a German-B1 certificate and another 3-6 months for a German-B2 certificate. Our recognition courses (Anpassungskurs) and preparation courses for the exam (Kenntnisprüfungsvorbereitungskurs) have a duration of 7-12 months and typically cover the theoretical and practical deficits.

Those nurses contracted with us receive a working contract as assistant nurse and a guarantee for an unlimited contract as a professional nurse from the successful completion of the recognition of their nursing degree in Germany.
